Ferns generally dry up and turn crispy when they are allowed to dry out. The soil should be kept moist but not soggy and the humidity level also needs to be kept high. This can be difficult during the indoor heating season. Running a humidifier, grouping plants together, and setting the pot on a pebble tray with water can all help. Also be sure to keep them out of drafts both hot or cold.
