My wife wants to cover an ugly stretch of fence in our back yard. A couple of trees overhang this fence, and she is concerned that usual sorts of clinging vine plants might wind up overtaking the trees. We just want something fairly fast growing and non-invasive to the trees. |
A clinging vine such as the evergreen English ivy will cover the chain link, but it will also run along the ground and eventually up into trees. Virginia Creeper will cover chain link but can also take over an area. Among the twining vines, fall blooming clematis and trumpet vine can grow quite far in a season but need to be cut back very hard each spring for best blooming, so they might be a possiblities. A smaller and better behaved twiner is the red-flowered honesuckle, this plant has the added bonus of being very attractive to hummingbirds. Burpee offers one variety of it -- 800-888-1447. |
