The Q&A Archives: Planting Beneath Walnut Trees

Question: How long does a walnut tree have to be dead before you can plant beneath it? Tom Kerstetter Reynoldsburg, OH

Answer: I'd say you can plant under a walnut tree about 1 year after you are sure it is dead and no growth is seen on the tree or off the roots. There may be some residual juglone in the roots, but I would think the concentration would be low enough to plant by then. Do a test planting just to be sure!
