| Air plants are usually Tillandsia ionantha, a kind of atmospheric bromeliad. These plants do not need soil to grow. They stay small and turn red in the center when they bloom. Happy air plants may make "pups" after blooming. They need bright to medium light and high humidity along with excellent air circulation to do their best. Watering is done by drenching them (or dunking them) or misting very heavily and allowing the excess water to drip off. They will die if their "roots" don't get enough air, so if they are potted you should use orchid bark rather than soil. Otherwise they can be gently wired to a slab of wood or bark for display. Use a dilute water soluble flowering houseplant fertilizer. Enjoy! |
