The Q&A Archives: Flowering Evergreen Shrubs

Question: I am trying to find a type of shrub or hedge plant that grows well in any light and both flowers and remains dense during the winter months, preferably one that spreads quickly. Trish Farver Greenwood, DE

Answer: That's a tall order you have there, partner! I can come up with plants that satisfy everything except the "spread quickly" part....Boxwood will tolerate full sun to full shade, has tiny flowers, and stays dense (it's one of my favorite shrubs). Yew will tolerate full sun and partial shade. There two are evergreen. Both tolerate shearing into hedges. Check your local garden center for other ideas.

  • When singular and plural spellings differ, as in peony and peonies, try both.
