The Q&A Archives: Ideal Temperatures for Melons

Question: I'm having a hard time getting melons going. I have cold frame and have tried to start my melons early. However they do not want to sprout for me in spite of the fact that I maintain temps at 60. I also need quanity as I plant quite a lot of melons for the farm market. I am looking for Supermarket' hybrid and Sugar Baby' seeds. Alan Krake New London, WI

Answer: Melons like lots of warmth. A 65F temperature for both the soil and air temperature is probably better than 60F. You may want to use a electric soil heating pad to ensure enough warmth. In the Spring 1997 Burpee you can find 'Suger Baby' seeds. To find Supermarket' hybrid you may want to contact your local Extension agent.
