The Q&A Archives: Office Plants

Question: I work in a small office (about 6' x 12') with no windows and incandescent canister lights. The lights are on, of course, eight hours a day, five days a week, but over the weekends they are off. Is there a plant that could survive/thrive in this type of environment? I would like to have some plants at work but I'd hate to get some and have them die. Is there a type of plant that would make it under these conditions? Thanks!

Answer: You might experiment with several different types of plants known to do well in lower light conditions and see if any of them do well for you. You could also consider having several plants and rotating them periodically so that one is at work and some are at home "on vacation" in a brighter location. Here are some to try: peace lily, English ivy, snake plant, pothos, Swiss cheese plant (Monstera deliciosa) and philodendron.
