The Q&A Archives: Helping Bulbs to Bloom

Question: I have tall green leaves coming up from the bulbs I planted in January and February, but still no blooms. Am I just being impatient, or is there some reason they're not blooming? Varieties: gladioli, anemone, freesia. I feed once a month and water twice weekly.

Answer: It may be a little early to expect blooms from newly planted glads, anemones, and freesias. Also, make sure they are getting full sun. Also, check the formula of the fertilzer you're using: it should be proportionately low in nitrogen (the first of the three numbers of the formula). If it's greater than the second and third numbers (or even close), switch to another fertilzer or quit fertilizing all together.
