I have a Virginia Creeper on a masonary wall facing south. After growing for 3 years, the plant is doing very well, but is in need of some control. Should I prune it back and start over, training it along the wall better, or will that ruin the plant? If I can prune it back, what time of year is best for pruning? |
This is a large vine and grows quickly once it is established. You can prune it back any time, but late winter is probably the best time to do it. It will regrow quickly from the established root system. Keep in mind that it is nearly impossible to remove the sticky pads it uses to cling to the wall, so keep a close eye on it and keep it in bounds often during the growing season. |
