My friend has a redbud tree (Cercis canadensis) and she has small trees (suckers) sprouting up off the root system. Can I transplant a sucker and expect it to grow into a full size tree? |
Although it is pretty unlikely, I wouldn't say it is impossible to take a redbud sucker with a good section of root and have it grow. It might be difficult to take this without harming the parent tree, especially if the tree is growing in a clump form. Redbuds normally produce a crop of seedlings around themselves, so this may be what you are seeing rather than actual suckers. You can certainly transplant seedlings and expect them to grow well, as long as you dig small ones very early in the spring, and keep them well watered until they become established. |
