| Fall is the ideal time to plant cool-season grasses. The reason is because seeds require a certain minimum soil temperature before they will germinate. For cool-season grasses, the soil temperature is between 55 and 60F. Seeds planted in the late summer and early fall, given proper moisture, will germinate rapidly and establish quickly. If a spring seeding is necessary, consider doing it as the frost comes out of the ground. The frost cracks provide crevices in which the seeds can lodge until the soil warms up enough for it to germinate. |
