Can amaranthus grow in direct sun in tucson, arizona?

Some amaranth varieties will take full sun here, but the 'Summer Poinsettia' mix that Burpee offers would be better with protection from hot afternoon sun because it has a wider, lusher type of leaf. (Note that native desert plants have very small leaves, thus limiting the surface area exposed to the sun.)
