I have a heating pad with a 3" long copper thermostat.I want to start my seeds in prefilled jiffy 7 pellets in a dome covered tray. My instructions say to insert the thermostat horizontally.Since the thermostat is longer then the pellets are wide how much of the thermostat must be in the soil to work properly,or is there a better way. |
You will need to insert it completely into soil if you want it to measure accurately. Make sure it is not touching anything but soil and follow the manufacturer's directions. Perhaps you can use a separate pan (a small plastic mushroom box from the grocery store is probably about the right size) just for the thermostat and set it under the dome along with your seeds. (It needs to be under the dome with your seeds as the dome will be holding some heat.) Alternatively you could possibly insert it through several pellets set on their sides -- but make sure it is not exposed to the air or you will get a bad reading and it may overheat. You might also contact the manufacturer and see if they have any suggestions. |
