The Q&A Archives: Mulching around Direct-Sown Seeds

Question: I will be sowing a mix of flower seeds directly into prepared soil. I want to mulch the bed with a few inches of double shredded bark. Do I mulch before or after I sow the seeds? Lori Lommel Skillman, NJ

Answer: Sow your seeds, let them germinate and grow until they're at least 6" tall, then consider weeding lightly and mulching the bed. The weeding kills any weeds that germinated and mulch help conserve water and stops any new weeds from growing.
