The Q&A Archives: Rejuvenating Container Daffodils

Question: I received potted tulip and daffodil plants for Easter. I would like to plant them so they will come up next year. What is the best way to do this? Lynda Halecki Roseland, NJ

Answer: Put them in a sunny spot outdoors and keep them watered. Fertilize them with a weak fertilizer solution. When the foliage begins to die back, gradually decrease the watering until the foliage is brown and can be cut off. Store the bulbs in their pots in a cool, dark place until fall then plant. The tulips will probably not bloom again for several years because they need to build up reserves of food for flowering.
