The Q&A Archives: Lilac Varieties for CA

Question: Lilacs are among the most fragrent of plants. I understand that there are over 2,000 varieties, but I'm unable to find many at the different nursery locations around here. What types would grow best in our area, which ones would be the most fragrent, and have the most blooms? Thank you for having this site. Tim Brown Arcadia, CA

Answer: Contact the following lilac specialist nursery about varieties that will grow well in California. I'd think you'd need some lower chill varieties such as 'Charles Joly' and 'Excel' that can take the mild winters. Wedge Nursery R 2, Box 114 ALbert Lea, MN 56007 507-373-5225
