Can dog/cat or human manure be used in composting? If not why? If so, any special technique? |
No. Dog, cat, pet bird, and human waste can contain parasites that can be transmitted. Manure from barnyard animals, such as horses, chickens, goats, rabbits, cows, and sheep can be used. Let it decompose for about 3-6 months before using so its heat won't burn plants. Or, you can incorporate it into the soil and let it decompose there before planting. In my opinion, the best way is to add it to your compost pile, where its high nitrogen content promotes decomposition of other materials as well and it helps make a rich, fertile compost. |
