The Q&A Archives: Starting Bush Beans Indoors

Question: What is the best way to plant bush beans indoors? I have a full package of unused seeds from last season, and would like to get an early start on the bush bean section of my garden by forcing them to start in potting soil and paper cups. H. JohnsonNewtown Square, PA

Answer: Start your bush bean seeds no more than 2-4 weeks before you plan on setting them out. You want to keep the plant as small as possible; the larger the plant is the more transplant shock it will suffer. Consider starting a few plants indoors, and direct-seeding a batch as well. That way you'll get an early picking, and have a second planting for a later harvest.
