After the straw is removed, from strawberry plants should the plants be cut down to the crown or is the old growth left on. This will be the second year for the plants. They are planted in a pyramid type bed. |
Ideally they would have been trimmed back late last summer and there would have been plenty of new foliage growth during the fall. Over the winter some of it may become a bit tattered, so go ahead and remove foliage if it looks moldy or mushy, being careful not to damage any new growth and taking care to work around the flower buds. Keep the straw handy so you can cover them if a cold snap hits -- the emerging flower buds must be protected from freezing temperatures or the plants will not bear. |
