Question: I am a 1st grade teacher and my class is going to grow a vegetable garden. I know nothing about gardening. What vegetables grow quickly? What flowers can we plant around the garden to protect it from bugs, animals?

Answer: The easiest summer vegetables for kids to to grow: beans, New Zealand spinach, pumpkins, squash, and tomatoes. Plant marigolds to help confuse incoming potential pests But don't plant them around the garden -- plant them in among the vegetables.
