The Q&A Archives: Annual

Question: I planted some beautiful dark burgundy gaillardias last summer which I presumed were perennials. They bloomed like crazy last summer and now they are dead. Did I buy an annual by mistake? J. Spero Columbus, OH

Answer: You may have purchased Gaillardia pulchella (another name Gaillardia drummondi) which is an annual. You need to get Gaillardia x grandiflora which is a perennial. If you did, indeed, get the latter, note that it will not survive winters in heavy clay soils.
