The Q&A Archives: Tips on Cosmos

Question: I am planting Cosmos for the first time this spring. Are they easy to grow? Is there anything special I should do for best results? What type of soil and water conditions are best? Will support be necessary? Michelle Saddle River, NJ

Answer: Cosmos are easy to grow. They like full sun and tolerate dry porous (sandy) soils. Don't overfertilize or all you'll get is foliage. The taller cosmos types should be given support or they may blow over in the wind. Pinch back young plants to promotebranching for bushier plants. Water during very dry spells.
