The Q&A Archives: Blueberry Varieties And Flavor

Question: I live in northwest Washington state. I would like to plant some blueberries. I like sweet and my spouse prefers tart berries. Can you recommend a few good varieties for our climate and flavor preferences?

Answer: Blueberries are a natural in the Pacific Northwest where soils are acidic, winters provide just enough chilling period, and summers are on the cool side. A tart-sweet blueberry that grows well here is 'Darrow'. The fruit is light blue and ripens in August. 'Olympia' bears sweet fruit, and 'Jersey' produces a spicy-sweet berry.

These blueberry cultivars are available from Raintree Nursery, 391 Butts Rd., Morton, WA 98356. (360-496-6400)
