| Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus) is best pruned in late winter or very early spring, so now is the time to do that. You are probably seeing the spent flowers or seed pods from last year rather than unopened buds -- so go ahead and cut them off. You may prune very lightly, very hard, or not at all as a matter of personal preference. This shrub blooms only on new wood of the season so do not prune it during the rest of the spring or summer or you will be cutting off the coming blooms. This shrub is not very picky about soil, but an early spring top dressing of compost or well rotted manure or some general purpose fertilizer would be fine. |
