I am looking for an appropriate shade tree to plant with in 5 feet of a concrete walkway. I would prefer one with a good canopy. I like the looks of sycamores, but prefer an evergreen tree.

Some well-behaved evergreen trees include Acacia, Cassia leptophylla (Golden Medallion Tree), Cupressus (Cypress), Eriobotrya deflexa (Bronze Loquat), Rhus lancea (African Sumac), and Stenocarpus sinuatus (Firewheel Tree). All grow well in your gardening zone and the roots are reported to be "sidewalk friendly" and should not invade the walkway.
