| Roses need a location in full sun with a rich, moist yet well drained soil. Prepare your planting location ahead of time be mixing in plenty of organic matter. To plant a bare root rose, soak it in water ahead of time. Make a cone of soil at the bottom of the hole, drape the roots over it, and add soil to fill in the hole. Mound soil or mulch up around the canes to help keep them moist until the plant begins to root. Gradually remove this material as the rose leafs out. To plant a container grown rose, water it well ahead of time, then set the rootball in the hole so that it is at the same depth as it grew before, fill in around it with soil. In both cases, water well to settle the soil and add a few inches of organic mulch around the root zone. Keep the soil evenly moist by watering every few days until the plant is well established. Finally, follow any instructions you receive with the rose as to planting depth or technique if there is a guarantee depending on it. |
