The Q&A Archives: Growing Artichokes in Maryland

Question: Is it possible to grow artichokes on the Eastern Shore of Maryland? Michael Valentine Chestertown, Md

Answer: Yes, it is possible to grow artichokes on the eastern shore of Maryland but it's not easy. You have to start with a first-year producing variety such as Imperial Star. Then, seed must be sown very early -- January or February -- and grown on in small pots until they can be planted out into the garden, after danger of frosts. The soil must be deep, rich, cool, and moist. Artichokes are heavy feeders and regular fertilizing will be necessary until buds form. Good luck.
