| How do you germinate the purple hyacinth bean? I received some from a trade. Also what is the best time to plant them in my area? Should I start them in a pot and then transplant or can I just put them in the ground? |
| Hyacinth bean (Dolichos lablab) is a perennial vine, often grown as an annual. It makes fast growth to about 10' and grows best in full sunshine, in well-draining soil with regular water during the growing season. Because the plants grow so quickly you can easily sow the seeds directly in the garden, but you can also start them indoors. To hasten germination, soak the seeds overnight before sowing. Start with very warm water, plop the seeds in, and allow to soak for 24 hours. Then sow 1/6 inch deep in prepared garden soil or moistened seed starting mix. Seedlings will appear in 14-30 days when kept at 70F. |
