What are the different types of soil and how well are they at holding in water? |
Soils are generally classified as clay, sand, or loam. Of course there are many gradations of each, with loam considered the ideal gardening soil. Sandy soils do not have good water retention. Clay soils hold water very well, often too well for the good of the plant. Adding organic matter to either sand or clay soils will improve their water retention qualities. |
