Staghorns are epiphytes so I took my newly purchased small staghorn out of its plastic container and stuck it in the crook of my oak tree--is this the correct way to get a staghorn started in the garden? Should I tie it up with string or something? Should I water it?

You might want to carefully attach it with a piece of wire or string until it puts out its own aerial roots for support. Or, you could tie it to a bark slab or something similar (perhaps covered with moss) and then tie that into the tree so you can move it elsewhere if you want to. You can spray it regularly with the hose or dunk it in a pail of water. Drench and then let it dry. They like high humidity (unlike lavender!) and good air circulation.
