| The most common reason tomatoes fail to ripen properly is that they need more sun; these plants really do best with full sun all day long, although they will manage on six hours of sun if those hours include noon. Some varieties are so well foliated that they may overshade the developing fruits; you might try removing a portion of the foliage if you suspect this is the case. Finally, some varieties, particualrly some specialty heirloom types, maintain a green rim or skin around the top even when ripe. You might want to try some different types of tomatoes and see if you get better results. Cherry tomatoes, incidentally, are the most adapatable to adverse conditions. |
