The answer to your question really depends on what type of plant you have used for the hedging and what ultimate shape and height you want it to be? If however it is a privet hedge, it should be trained from the beginning by trimming it each time it grows about six inches. This encourages it to grow dense from the base and keeps it thick at the bottom. Next, it should be trimmed to be narrower at the top than at the bottom. This allows light to reach the base of the hedge and will keep the bottom leaves healthy. When the hedge reaches the height and width that you want, simply trim often to maintain it.
