The Q&A Archives: Controlling Boxelder Bugs

Question: We have a problem with boxelder bugs on our south-facing concrete front porch

Answer: Although generally harmless except to boxelder trees, I understand that congregations of boxelder bugs can be unwelcome. There is a very safe solution in the form of silica aerogel, which absorbs the cuticle, or protective layer, on the insect's body, causing dehydration and death. The preferred formulation is the brand Dri-Die, sold by Fairfield American Corp. (201 Rte 17 N, Rutherford, NJ, 07070; (201)507-4880 - in your home state!). It is toxic to fish, so it should not be used where it can contaminate water. Follow the label instructions for application. Other than this, I know of no recommended repellent.
