Although crab apples can be pruned anytime except from August to October, the IDEAL time is during the winter when the tree is dormant, but the temperatures are not below freezing. Pruning is not recommend in late summer and early fall, because pruning stimulates new growth, and such new growth will not have time to become sufficiently hardy before winter. Spring and summer pruning is less desirable when pruning for shape because it is difficult to see the branches well when the leaves are out full.
