The Q&A Archives: Pruning Juniper

Question: How and when do I prune large juniper bushes? How and when do I prune boxwoods? Sara McDonald Atlanta, GA

Answer: Both juniper and boxwood should be pruned in spring before active growth begins (probably March in your region?). Remove dead and damaged branches, and shear both to shape. Don't overdo it though - I've seen shrubs that were tortuously clipped back to very mature wood that took a long time to grow back and look decent. A little trim to keep them neat should be all you need.
