I have heard differing opinions on whether to cut off the spent lilac blooms. Some say you should leave them on so the shrub will get bushier but this looks unsightly.I feel they should be cut off after they are done flowering. Can you give me an answer please?

In practice, most lilac bushes are not deadheaded and seem to do just fine. However, removing the spent blooms improves the appearance of the plant and may also conserve its energy by not allowing it to produce seed.
