| I have a chance at 6 free blueberry bushes and only very general knowledge about the plant/s. My space is limited (average suburban lot), but i would like to take advantage of this offer. I have found that blueberries may be grown in a hedge, but without more info on this practice I am unsure on the direction I should take. |
| Most blueberries are very large plants, so be sure you have plenty of space for them -- depending on variety they may need to be planted six to eight feet apart. You also need matching varieties in order for them to set fruit. They absolutely require an extremely acidic soil that is humusy, evenly moist and yet well drained. This can require substantial preparation and possibly even creation of a special raised planting area for them. In order to anticipate what would need to be done you will need to have your soil tested and then add amendments as indicated by the results. Your county extension (350-2540) should be able to help you with this. Finally, blueberries need full sun and may require watering during hot or dry summers; they will also need protection from birds as they crop ripens. |
