The Q&A Archives: Columbine Basics

Question: I'd appreciate information on columbine - general information, when to plant, how tall it gets, what care it needs, pests to look out for, etc. Thanks. Bob Holman Charlottesville, VA

Answer: The hybrid varieties Burpee offers prefer fairly fertile, moisture retentive soil in full sun or light shade. They grow to a height of 2 to 3'. You can start seed in flats or out in the garden, and they should bloom the following year. Columbines bloom well for a few years and then should be replaced by new plants. They are subject to leafminers, aphids and spidermites, all of which are best controlled by growing a diverse garden community of plants which encourages natural pest predators and diseases. If you happen to run into difficulties with any of these pests, let us know and we can help you with a solution.
