My neighbor places very large amounts of moth balls in his vegetable garden to keep rabbits, squirls, deer, etc. away.It is almost impossible for me to go outside with the terrible odor. Please help.I need to be able to suggest a safe, cheap, and clean alternative. There is a thick growth of brush and some trees nearby although we live in a villiage in northern NY state.Thank you in advance. PS I am going to grow a veg. and flower garden also. Wish me luck. |
In my experience, the most reliable prevention is a fence, but that won't stop squirrels. Some gardeners report success using repellent sprays, either home-made garlic and/or red pepper based or the commercial formulations of repellents of which there are a number. A pet cat or dog on patrol can be useful too in discouraging the intruders. Sometimes it takes a combination of methods to achieve acceptable results. Although moth balls have been suggested as a repellent many times over the years, they are no longer recommended due to the chemicals they release and potential dangers should pets or children ingest them. I hope this helps. |
