The Q&A Archives: How &when Do I Prune Sweet Autumn Clematis

Question: I have a sweet autumn clematis plant growing up a chain link fence. The plant is around 5 years old and I have never pruned it.It is now very thick with the old growth. When and how much of it should I prune?

Answer: This plant can be pruned as hard as needed in early spring and will regrow and bloom the same season. It may even bloom better if pruned back hard every spring, but as you have probably noticed, it is not strictly required.
