True pussy willows (Salix discolor or Salix caprea) are native to wet places and thus prefer moist soil but will grow almost any location except one that is abnormally dry. They do well in full sun or partial shade. The plant is actually a tree growing to about 20 feet, but if it is cut back for harvesting catkins each year that will help keep it a bit smaller and bushier.
