| Hello. I have a bank directly outside my front door. It is approx. 4 1/2 - 5 ft. high and approx. 25 ft. long. At the bottom of the bank we have built a raised bed from stone. I have various plants (typical of a cottage garden), growing in the bed, but am at a loss as to what evergreen plant to grow on the bank (the original owner had plant crown vetch amongst other things). What perennial or low growing shrub would be suitable? The bank is in full sun most of the day. I am looking for something that spreads quickly, is in the cottage theme (or neutral) and because of the size of the bank, is relatively inexpensive. |
| Creeping phlox might do nicely -- inexpensive, evergreen, lovely carpet of spring bloom, then a neutral foliage effect and good at smothering weeds. However, since it is a bank you might take advantage of it to establish all kind of rock garden plants from iris to arabis to sedums to creeping thymes and other herbs. You could also consider using carpet type junipers, a low growing cotoneaster, or perhaps one of the Euonymous fortunei. |
