The Q&A Archives: Storing spring bloomers?

Question: I am reworking my perennial beds and need tips on best way to go about it, i.e. do I dig up the spring bloomers after they bloom and store them until fall (and how do you store them)?

Answer: Don't even think about storing plants over summer. What you need to do is create a holding or reserve garden where you can heel the plants in once they've been dug from the site to be renovated. Do that now before plants put on too much active growth and before they bloom. A Reserve Garden need not be big. Simply plant the plants in rows very close to one another, with just enough room between the plants to allow for one season's growth. Make sure everything is labeled well.
