With its shallow roots, what perennial can be planted under rhododendrons?

Some gardeners will use an undemanding plant such as hardy cyclamen or ferns or epimedium and allow them to naturalize so as to minimize root disturbance, others prefer to leave the plants competition-free and simply use a carpet of mulch.
