I have a very large butterfly bush and I am afraid that it will get too "leggy" how do I prune it so that it will stay somewhat "bushy" and get alot of bloom? Thanks! |
Butterfly bushes are naturally a bit gangly and leggy. In early spring, prune away any winter killed branches, and then prune as needed for shaping. To encourage branching and bushiness, prune lightly several times in the spring; each cut will force the plant to branch and eventually you will create a basic framework of branches. The blooms form at the tips of the branches so the more tips, the more blooms. The plant blooms on new growth of the season, so do not prune too late into the spring or it will delay blooming substantially. |
