The Q&A Archives: Care of Pendulous Sedge

Question: We have an inordinate amount of dead leaves/grasses on the pendulous sedge this year. Should the plants be divided? They have been in the same location for about 6-7 years and are a part of water garden.

Answer: Pendulous or weeping sedge is a great plant for a moist/wet area. It needs sun to part shade. This said, was last year unusually dry, so that the ground didn't stay continually moist? Has the area around the water garden become fully shaded over the last 6-7 years? If these conditions don't seem to be the cause of the excessive dead leaves, then it may just be overcrowded. Divide it between midspring and early summer. Keep the dead leaves off of the new growth to avoid rust and fungal diseases.
