The Q&A Archives: Abbreviations for Tomato Diseases

Question: I was wondering if you could explain what type of diseases correspond to the letters after the names of particular tomatoes i.e. VFFNTASt. Your help would certainly be appreciated. Bill Armstrong Oklahoma City, OK

Answer: V stands for Verticillium wilt, F stands for Fusarium wilt (there are 2 races of Fusarium so you'll sometimes see FF for both races), N stands for nematodes, T stands for Tobacco Mosaic Virus, A stands for alternaria. I'm not sure what St stands for;it could refer to "stem rot".
