My backyard slopes to a low point that holds a lot of water. Is there some sort of bush or shrub that I could plant that would help suck up the water and not die of root rot?

Here are some shrubs to consider for an area that is moist (but not standing water): deciduous holly (Ilex verticillata), inkberry holly (Ilex glabra), shrub dogwoods (Cornus sericea), Itea, and Virginia Swetspire (Clethra). Unfortunately, while these shrubs do prefer a moist soil, I would not rely on them to solve a drainage problem by sucking up the water.
