How can I convince my design customers that if they plant a screening hedge too close together,(Tsuga or Thuja) than the opposite effect will eventually occur? Besides showing a picture.

Maybe you could make a scale model of what happens to the plants over time under optimum conditions and under the crowded conditions, being careful to explain why it happens. Also be sure to help them understand the true potential size of the mature plant if left untrimmed. Usually, though, pictures are pretty effective.
