What type of flowering shrub would I use in a filtered area which will not grow fast or approx. more than 2ft. by 2ft.? I do not have a problem with hand trimming if necessary.

If you want a plant to remain small, you'll be happiest with the dwarf cultivars of plants like azalea, hydrangea, gardenia and skimmia. Each of these plants will remain small, and you can prune after flowering to keep them bushy.
